Bentley, Staffordshire – A Jigsaw Puzzle Parish

The administration of the parish of Bentley, on the main road from Walsall to Wolverhampton, resembles a jigsaw puzzle. Although Bentley is in the Walsall Rural Council area, it belongs to the Cannock Parliamentary Division. Its police go to Willenhall. It belongs to the Walsall postal district, but is in the Darlaston telephone area. It gets gas from Willenhall, water from Wolverhampton and electricity from Ocker Hill, miles away. If a dead body is found the coroner has to journey from Brierley Hill to hold an inquest, and when a parishioner dies the funeral goes to the neighbouring parish of Short Heath, although there is a cemetery within the Bentley district. But that belongs to Willenhall. Furthermore, Bentley has no public house, no church and no chapel.
