Fatal Accident – Tamworth Man Run over by Trucks – New Zealand - 1938

William Ernest Bird, aged 43, a waterside worker employed by the Railway Department, lost his life at 4.50 p.m, today when breaking down a rake of trucks of coal for loading. He uncoupled three trucks and intended to hold those following but he either slipped or his foot caught in the points and he was run over,' a leg being severed from the hip.' Death was apparently instantaneous.

Mr. Bird was a native of Tamworth, Staffordshire, and had been fifteen years in New Zealand. He was prominent in local Labour circles, being a Labour nominee for the coming borough council elections. He was a married man with two sons.

William was born in Glascote, Tamworth, Staffordshire in 1895. In 1911 he was living in School Lane, Glascote, Tamworth.
