The sad story of Albert Barton of Tamworth, Staffordshire

The sad story of Albert Barton of Tamworth, Staffordshire

Newspaper report 1878

Another fatal bathing case

On Wednesday afternoon an inquest was held at Tamworth, on Albert Barton, aged twelve. Deceased and other lads went to bathe in the river, the former and a boy named Fairfield got out, but noticing afterwards that Barton was sinking he bravely jumped in with the view, if possible, of saving him. Deceased then seized him by the neck and several times drew him under the water, which was fourteen or fifteen feet deep.  Fairfield eventually got liberated, but was much exhausted and narrowly escaped losing his life. Verdict. “Accidentally drowned.”
